What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file which is downloaded to your device when you visit a website. The information it contains is sent back to the originating website as you move between pages, or sometimes to another website which recognises the cookie. You can read more about cookies at: www.allaboutcookies.org and www.youronlinechoices.eu; or watch a video at www.google.com/intl/en-GB/policies/technologies/cookies.

What do we use cookies for?

The main cookies we use are called “session” cookies. These allow us to see how many people are currently using the site and to help logged-in users, e.g. those editing content, to navigate sensibly from page to page. We also use cookies from Google Analytics to help us analyse the use of the site. These do not collect any personal information.

A tracking cookie from another website may sometimes be downloaded, for example, when you visit a page with an embedded YouTube video. We do not use cookies which deliver advertisements, collect information about your browsing habits, or pass any personal data onto third parties. However, you can still refuse these cookies if you want to by disabling “third-party” cookies in your browser.

There are also some ‘external’ links which leave the site completely, such as the social networking options. We do not take responsibility for any cookies that may be downloaded once you click one of those.
